Montana has four state prisons and 18 others under private management, and the total inmate population is about 15,000. The population includes offenders in the county jails waiting for trial or under one year or less imprisonment.
You can locate an inmate in Montana via the state's correctional department online search. The department has a record of all the offenders incarcerated in the state posted for public access.
You only require the inmate's name or the inmate's Montana Department of Corrections number (MDOC). They receive it during prison admission.
Here are steps on how to use the Montana State offender locator.
Step 1. Key in the inmate's MDOC number (optional)
Step 2. Type the offender's name. Start with the last, then the first name.
Step 3. Click the submit button.
The search might take longer if you don't have the inmate's identification number, especially with common names. However, the database contains mugshots of each inmate, which makes it easy to spot your inmate.
The inmate database is updated daily. Therefore, you can trace an inmate's location even after they are transferred to a different holding facility.
Please note you shouldn't use the information provided by the MDOC for any commercial use. If it's for official purposes, contact the Montana Department of Corrections to get legitimate documents of the offender.
There are 56 counties in Montana; each has a jail roster containing all the incarcerated inmates in the local jails. You can access the database on the county Sheriff's website.
It contains the inmate's name, case charged with, booking number, and date of release or trial; some counties have mugshots attached to the inmate's name for easy identification.
A jail roster comes in handy if you know the county where an offender was arrested. However, if not, use the state's department inmate search to locate the offender.
Alternatively, contact the office via (406) 444-3930 for assistance if you can't find the inmate in the online search.
