Michigan Inmate Search

The MDOC enables the general public to find an inmate using the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS). The tracking tool is available on the website, and you must agree to its terms and conditions before using it.  

The system only provides information about state prison detainees. In addition, OTIS has information on individuals released before completing three years after their discharge. The Michigan law requires the MDOC to maintain prisoners' records on the system for three years upon release. Below is a simple step guide on how to find a convict online; 

Step 1: Visit the MDOC inmate search page. 

Step 2: Click on the OTIS database system.  

Step 3: Key in the inmate's name, sex, race, age, MDOC number and status. 

Step 4: A list of Michigan convicts with details matching what you've submitted pops up. From the available list, pick the offender of your interest. 

Step 5: Click on the inmate's MDOC number to access details such as; 

• Name of the incarceration facility 
• Custody status 
• Inmate's full names 
• Date of birth 
• Offenders Number 
• Inmate's gender and race 
• Height and weight 
• Hair color 

However, the inmate search page fails to provide details such as; 

• Convicts in city or county jails as they fall under the county's jurisdiction 
• Details of inmates freed three years without supervision 
• Data of inmates awaiting sentencing as its termed exempt under the Michigan Freedom of Information 
• Mugshots of convicts whose images were not taken while in imprisonment 

Information about the most recent release is maintained in the database system under the specific state correctional facility. Check on the sheriff's office if you still can't find the imprisoned individual.
